This is pretty funny...here's a post I just realized was sitting in my drafts folder since November 5, 2010! I thought it would be nice to post, even though Tim and I live in a different apartment. Enjoy!

Since moving to the city in September, I've discovered something fantastic....free stuff! Wandering the city on random days have led me to find a few cool things.

Exhibit A:

Free art, found in the South End after a yard sale ended...great antique oil painting on the other side!

Exhibit B:

This great piece of art was discovered by my good friend Christina. It was out-to-trash behind her apartment, and when she saw it she called me knowing it would be perfect for our apartment...she was SO right! Thanks babe!!

Of course as a struggling, living-off-the-loans graduate student, anything free sounds fabulous to me! (Hm, I think that rhymes...)

So, walk around your town and check out the goods. If you're lucky enough to live in a great area, you might find some yard sale leftovers lingering by the asphalt. Enjoy!

Meet Colette!

Last Saturday Tim and I went to the Animal Rescue League and adopted a kitty!! Her name was Jody but I changed it to Colette...although I call her Cocobella here and there...!

She's 4 years old and super loving and funny. She makes the silliest meows and is really playful, to the point where it's 5am and she's got a toy mouse in her mouth, meowing to wake us up to play. She loves hoarding all the toys at the foot of our bed at that time, too. It's still in it's cute phase, hasn't bugged me yet!

Seraphina, who is still our number one little girl, took about a week to get accustomed to her. She was hissing and growling quite a bit during the first 4 days (we kind of threw them together almost immediately, since we work full time), claiming her territory, hiding...it was heartbreaking. Now she is back to normal, and she and Colette have started playing together a little. Colette loves to sleep at my feet on the bed, and Seraphina has started sleeping on Tim's pillow by his head, as well as all over him. I just can't wait for them to love each other and cuddle!

And I must say, having these two little girls at home is simply perfect. I love them both too too much!!

I know, I have been severely lacking on posts. I've been working quite a bit at the resto and also just had some great news...I got a per diem job at a local mental health hospital! I'm so excited to begin the new position and get back into the field. Suffice it to say I've been a tired busy bee. ::wink::

Happy Halloween, everyone!! Yesterday was SoWa's Market of the Living Dead, and Timothy did not disappoint. We took the T and got a million confused and funny looks from everyone. It's funny, because people were actually embarrassed to look at Tim...weird.

Tim was dressed as Zombie Mario Batali, complete with some real spaghetti which he ate out of his 'stomach and intestines'! Yuck.

I was dressed as a 1960s secretary who was strangled by her boss...it was a last minute idea that allowed me to wear a wig. Any excuse to change my hair color non-permanently is brilliant! Today, I'm dressing up as Wednesday Addams...we'll see how that goes!

Yay me!! I think for this mini-milestone I'd like to post some photos I've taken with that wonderful handy-dandy app, Instagram; some photos are also taken with Hipstamatic, but I certainly use Instagram more. I've always been passionate about photography, which is a hobby of both of my parents. I love how taking cool, vintage-looking photos is so accessible now, and doesn't cost me a dime! Enjoy some of my most treasured photos:

If you haven't heard by now, Postagram is an amazing app that allows you to send your photos as postcards, and you can pop the photos out to frame or post anywhere! I've ordered several, and they make really great surprises for faraway friends. There's a couple other sites that allow you to obtain hard copies of your iPhone photos, and this one is by far my favorite.

I am a major dork. I admit it wholeheartedly.

Last Wednesday the lovely Grace Bonney came to Boston for her first book tour for the newly released amazingly wonderful glam Design*Sponge at Home book!
Yes, I preordered [on Amazon].
Yes, I tweeted Grace about 5 times before she even got to the West Elm in Kenmore.
Yes, I got to West Elm 2 hours before the book signing started...before Grace even got there.
Yes, I was first in line.
And yes, I repeatedly told the staff at West Elm that I was not in any way a stalker.

My wonderful lover Tim came with me, probably just because he had the idea to get some Tasty Burger afterwards (right down the street from West Elm). I ended up buying 2 recycled glass shot glasses and a plaid ruffled pillow for my mom that she had been eyeing. I felt so awkward walking around - they kept the store open even during the signing. And, let me explain, I got there early because I was worried there would be a line - when my mom and I went to Ina Garten's book signing at the Natick Collection, we waited in line for nearly 2 hours! I was being smart...

Fast-forward to the book signing...Grace was lovely and apologized for running later than they expected (they had a craft class from 6-7 that people signed up for in advance). She was super petite and sweet! I told her how I relied on her blog heavily to decorate my new 500 sq ft apartment with my man, and that I loved the redesign of the blog...and she said thank you, of course, and also said she hoped I liked the book...THE BOOK! I completely didn't mention it. As I walked away, I said, "Oh my god I LOVE it!!" Yup. Silly Shelby.

So this weekend was probably one of the more expensive weekends I've ever experienced. Cue tax-free weekend in Massachusetts, so it was prime time to make some large purchases for our fabulous new apartment. We ended up buying:

that KARLSTAD sofa in white (praise removable slip covers!),
those delicious chest of drawers from IKEA in black brown with the glass top,
a 42" LCD LG TV,
some sort of Blueray system with speakers that Tim wanted and scored for way over half off,
a router that we will be returning in order to find something much cheaper ($180 is just too much to spend!),
a microwave (because 700 watts just isn't enough),
a new toaster,
what will be our new kitchen table was originally a silver cafe table from Borders (RIP) that I scored for 55 bucks...we're going to spray paint it white to go with my chairs,
Giada's food processor from Target, because it was $20 off and the same quality as a $100 one...pestos, people!!

All in all it was stressful but easy, since we planned basically everything out that we wanted to buy. We're getting more and more excited to move in (17 days left!), but I'm also getting nostalgic already for this beautiful apartment we live in now. The crown-molding and antique door knobs, the sound of the old wood under my slippers, the view of the city from every room...it will be hard to leave this place but at least we know we're moving somewhere better and sans so many rowdy college students!

I still cannot believe how much stuff I have, I'm trying to be really cruel and donate as much as possible. I'm starting to be more stringent with clothes particularly, considering I have certain items I wear maybe once a year. Why keep wearing them? Why not just donate it to someone who will wear it more and appreciate it? I'm part-hoarder, as you know, and it is still so hard for me to give up things. For further example, I have a bright green Paul Frank t-shirt with an upside-down monkey head. The shirt fits me terribly and yet I have kept it since, oh, 2002? I plan on making it into a pillow...keyword here: plan. Will it ever manifest? Here's hopin'...however, I don't own a needle and thread. Woops.

We've also been thinking about getting new bedding, since we're not too fond of the brown kissing pleat set I had bought last year (although I'd really like to dye it all black and see what happens...). Here's one duvet we really love from West Elm...I'm gunna vote yes. I'm anti-shams though, I think that's too much going on. We have simple white shams that I think would go much better, along with dark gray pillow cases.

Tim and I went on another magical IKEA journey today, this time though was the most special. We scoured the isles for everything we had found online, measuring and writing things down with the little pale pencil...we found exactly what we're envisioning for our new home, and we're so excited! I had to, of course, buy some things...I mean hey, we drove all the way to Stoughton! I got some cute salad tongs (see below), a can opener (see below), and some fake peonies as promised (and some other stuff, more 'see below'!). The biggest score? We went into the "As-Is" department, a wondrous place, and found this beauty on sale for 40 bucks because it was missing the packaging...YES!!

Yay! Now time to save save save.

Sorry for the severe lack of updates lately, loves. I have been working 5-6 days at the restaurant and the hours can be funky.

Something major has happened, and I can't believe I haven't shared it!

Tim and I found our next apartment, a home to call our own, indeed!! It's a one bedroom, with a private entrance off of the main apartment building, in the ever bellissimo, per morire (thanks Vanessa for teaching me some Italian!) area of Boston...the North End! We move in September 1st, also the worst day to move in Boston (especially for moving out of Allston...), and I've already packed almost everything up. I started last month and have nearly everything but the necessities packed up. I'm also really trying to downsize my wardrobe and all of my crap...I have so much stuff! So far I've packed like, 20 boxes...not including the one's in my small storage unit in Plymouth. Woops. I figure though, once we move in and we deal with the space we have, I'll downsize more and really get brutal.

So here's what I've had in mind for what we'll need for the new home:

Fake peonies so the kitty won't eat them! (from IKEA)

This dresser that can double as a stylish piece behind a sofa, with books stacked on it or some flowers...(from IKEA)

This sheepskin rug is something my boyfriend has been wanting since our last IKEA trip... definitely for the bedroom! (from IKEA)

This tumbler for our toothbrushes (from Target)

A comfy couch, in white or gray, and I'm totally going to paint the legs a bright color! (from IKEA)

A wardrobe to cleverly hide our abundant amount of clothing (from IKEA)

We also still need to get some short tiny curtains for our...well...unusable windows. Yeah, there's only one in the apartment that opens, and it's teeny, but we have central air! So hooray! We've started making a list of what we need and how much we want to spend on it...and of course the boyfriend added "LOVE" to the list. Awww mushy gushy!!

Alright, off to go through some magazines before work...I must say, I am enjoying the lack-of-clutter! Maybe I will end my hoarding ways with this next move...?

Sorry to be so MIA, ladies and gents, I've been busy having a 7 yr anniversary with the man, went on a wonderful day trip to Newport, Rhode Island, and turned 25, all in the span of 4 days! Other than that, I've been working and trying to find a job.

I will post photos of Newport asap (I am in LOVE with Rosecliff!), but I wanted to quickly post about a recent super amazing thing that happened...I WON A GORGEOUS THROW FROM THE COCO + KELLEY BLOG!!

I entered, just like I do on other blogs, presuming "theres no way out of 400+ people I'll even be considered...randomizer or not!" And yet, I WON! I never ever check my Twitter and that's how the lovely Cassandra notified me, like a week earlier. Frantically, I DM'd her, tweeted that I'd won, and then, after a few hours, panicked some more, went on her website, and emailed her. Yeap, I probably seemed like a crazy person.

Today, after arriving home from an interview, I saw my box from Coco + Kelley...I immediately opened it and found a lovely little white box tied with gorgeous black and white ribbon, along with a little note and card from the company. And then, tucked comfortably under white tissue paper, was the most beautiful throw ever!!! I immediately hugged it...yes, I kid you not, I hugged it. So soft! I am so looking forward to cuddling up with it tonight with a magazine or two.

My new hat

I hardly wear hats. Perhaps I get this from my mother, who also rarely wears hats. However, I love them. I especially love to wear knit ones in the fall and winter, but my hair gets so gross and greasy (sorry!) after a full day of hattage.

On those days when I can afford to go through that greasefest, I don a hat. One of those types of days is when I go on my Brimfield adventure! I just bought this, as seen in this post, at Urban Outfitters on sale for $9.99. It reminds me of my beloved Claude Monet's hats! Swoon.

Hello lovies,

Went to Brimfield this past Friday! Although my mother is a speed shopper, I ended up being able to take some photos and score some sweet stuff. Literally right before my mom and I finally found stuff (about 2 hrs into hunting), it was like "bam bam bam!"...And I spent more than I make in a week. It was a long day, and we spent far too much time in traffic pre- and post-antiquing (stupid highways and road work!), but it was well worth the trip. I ended up squashed in a tiny little opening in the trunk of my mom's Jeep Liberty, between all of the stuff we bought, and the trip home took...ready? Nearly 3 hours! That's TWICE as long as it should have taken! Oh boy. Well anyway, enjoy some photos...

My aunt, who is the most amazing sample and contest winning woman ever, recently won some stunning nail polish from Priti via Allure magazine. I love the color, it's like a nudey mauve, and it lasted for a while. Upon checking out the website, I found out they are free of DHP, toluene, and formaldehyde. They even recycle your old bottles! Since that remake of "Arthur" is coming out with Russell Brand, I figured I might as well watch the old one... especially since it's on Instant. Liza Minnelli is in it, and I actually found myself adoring her...very Anne Hathaway in this film...or I suppose it'd be the other way around...? Whatever you get it. We did it! Well, I did it with the man's consent. I l o v e our new sheets and comforter, it's so cozy and comfy and cottony-light.

I used an old twin-sized duvet cover (the green and whote striped one) at the bottom of our bed to give it some more dimension. We've also got a khaki colored fitted sheet, a white flat sheet, and a white duvet cover, with white shams and off-white pillow cases. I put on those kissing pleat shams just to add more depth. I love how it turned out!

Toying with the idea of making this blog more than what it is now. I read a multitude of blogs every day and love the uniqueness of it (and loathe the repetition of some). However, now that I have an iPhone I feel obligated to post more about what is Shelby, versus other things... Call it self-centered, although I an far from it and lack quite a bit of self-esteem. I'm interpretting it as becoming more original, mayhaps.

I suppose this post is me brainstorming, stream-of-conscious style. It may lead to a totally different blog, though, which wouldn't be the worst of ideas I suppose. Hmm...

Saturday my boyfriend and I had a romantic day around the city, our first outing since moving here. We had brunch at Zaftigs and then wandered over to the Museum of Fine Arts to take in the Richard Avedon and Scaasi exhibits. Both were absolutely incredible, I highly recommend if you're in the area!

I got my Warby Parkers! And can I just say I love saying their name? It's so nerdy cute.

Here are some pics I just took with my computer a la Photobooth...mind you I'm very tired and just got back from work at The Beehive...yes, I work there! I got a job as a hostess, and so far I love it. It's great to work somewhere so classy, edgy, and hip!

I feel super self-conscious still since I just got them, and because I ordered them online. For the past eight years I had gone to the same wonderful gent named Matt at Pearle Vision, and he is BRILLIANT at finding glasses for any face shape. So imagine the anxiety browsing for new glasses online provoked! However, Warby Parker offers a Virtual Try-On, as well as FREE returns and FREE exchanges! Both of which I did twice in order to find the perfect pair for my round face. I contacted the company by email in order to do the returns, and each time I had a prompt, super friendly response! These people are amazing at this company. And my glasses are amazing, super high quality, with a really cute case and lens cloth! I'm kind of obsessed with the bright blue inside of my new grayish case...it's special. Oh, and did I mention that these frames PLUS high quality, anti-reflective lenses only cost $95?!?! I paid $125 because I'm blind as a bat (hello, -6.00 and -6.50). But really...when can you pay that little for glasses?! My red Gucci's were close to $400 at Pearle Vision. And yes, they were quite worth it and I'll have them forever, but to switch it up and try a new style for a little over a hundred bucks is, well, priceless. If that makes sense.

Alright loves, off to read the September issue of Vogue and VegNews in my bed! Sweet dreams!

Found a desk similar to this at Savers yesterday for about 8 bucks.

Here's my idea...cover it with wallpaper, the top and inside at least...maybe even wrap the legs...with wallpaper like this...or just paint the whole desk...:

...And then use it as my bedside table.

Thoughts? I'm too giddy and stressed out to make a decision.
